Forsaken: The Edge of Everything
"Calico" Jack Rackham
California State Assemblyman, District 29
“If politics is the art of the deal, call me Rembrandt.”
State Assemblyman John Stapleton “Calico Jack” Rackham is a one of the better-known Democratic politicians in California, a big fish in a big pond. A career pol, he rose from the Santa Cruz School Board to its City Council to the Assembly in only six years. Today, the representative from District 29 is on the short list to succeed Gavin Newson as governor in 2024.
Tall, ginger, and handsome, with big hands and a bigger smile, Calico Jack has the gift of gab and a knack for appearing cynically sincere. It’s clear he’s a ruthless — maybe even corrupt — politico, but he does well by his constituents before lining his own pockets. That he lines them a bit goes without question; when not at their condo in downtown Sacramento, Jack and his socialite husband Avi live high in the hills overlooking Santa Cruz.
Whatever Calico Jack has going on under the table, above-board he’s a savvy wheeler-dealer who’ll listen to anyone with an offer that helps the voters (and their duly elected representative.)
